Community support

Social Responsibility

Supporting the Community, in an integrated and sustained manner is a legacy of the Sonae Group culture. Throughout all our activities, we seek to strengthen the resilience and autonomy of communities around us and contribute to the eradication of poverty in its different forms.

We strive to draw our staff and companies closer to communities, where our resources are directed to partnering with other organizations to help improve the most disadvantaged situations.

Our activities are guided by social responsibility and it is mostly through volunteering that Sonae has impacted the communities adjacent to its companies.

Porto Palácio - Temporary transfer of Premises

In 2020, during the exceptional context caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, the Porto Palacio Hotel made 70 rooms available to healthcare professionals in the fight against Covid 19 in hospitals in Porto. Apart from accommodation, the hotel provided courtesy breakfast, coffee in the foyer, takeaway meals and free parking.

"Since the hotel is closed for business, we feel obliged to join the Porto Town Council and provide confort and safety for those working on the front line in the fight against Covid 19. We have the capacity and the will to respond and healthcare professionals are our priority at present. We can make them confortable and assist them in controlling this pandemic as quickly as possible. We also wish to emphasize and thank our staff for their willingness to make this possible, and for their team effort. " Pedro Serra, General Director of Hotel Operations.

  • Sonae Activeshare Programme

Implemented across the Group's companies, with the purpose of consolidating and aggregating the Group's Social Responsibility and Volunteering actions, it has embodied a large part of these initiatives. For example, Atlantic Ferries granted approximately 12,000 euros in 2019 and 2020, by guaranteeing free catamaran and ferry rides to 2,131 passengers from 9 institutions. This initiative sought to carry to the beach at the Troia Peninsula users of social care facilities, such as the São Sebastião Parish Social Centre and the Palmela Social Centre, and provide support to environmental institutions, such as Ocean Alive and Brigada do Mar.
